Is social media dead?

By Nick in techie

Trent Reznor seems to drop out of the Social Media scene this week saying,

“I will be turning out of the social networking sites because at the end of the day it’s now doing more harm than good in the bigger picture and the experiment seems to have yielded a result. Idiots rule.”

He is not the only one Josh Brown, TSK, Mark O, they are all bailing on some sort of social networking. [Kathryn is also blogging about this.]

Me, I don’t know. I have twitter, my blog, and facebook. Josh tried to get me into Loopt, but meh. I will keep my twitter, and my blog. Maybe one day I will get rid of facebook. But for now, I just manage what I do with each platform. I live in the tension. It is a both/and thing.

I tried to get into it, but I still just can’t quite enjoy any of the social stuff.

Myspace… has sucked from its inception. That’s all I’m going to say about that.

Facebook is a huge time-eater if you get too into it. I have all notifications turned off, and as a result I never use it. I honestly don’t know why I haven’t deleted my account yet.

Twitter is friendly and light-weight enough that I actually do use it, though I still find myself thinking “WTF is this for anyway?” when tweeting.

Personal blogs are nice for thinking, hashing, but not so great at the social thing. Mainly because nobody reads them. And the whole comment thing…

Take this one for example. By now it’s longer that your post and you’ve already had about three ideas that you’d like to hash out with me over a coffee, but you can’t because it’s here in this little . And not at a table where we can look at each other.

Maybe I’m just old fashioned, but I much prefer the phone call, or even better, the sit-down-together-with-a-beer-thing when “keeping up”.

    Yeah, myspace sucks.

The question I have is how much do we need to utilize these media for future business ventures.

If it wasn’t for social media I wouldn’t have numbers to give to a publisher, for example.

So if we want to do something where we can show numbers, is this our only way to do it?

If you’re talking business, numbers are the most important thing, and this is a really sad thing in a lot of ways. More than we can really get into here.

A lot of really great ideas never come to life simply because they don’t have the numbers to back it up. I’m a living example of this.

A lot of cheap shit gets tossed around because greasy people can make a good sales pitch.

That’s how business works, unfortunately. And that’s why business and art will never really get along with each other.

I’ve actually considered closing my myspace and facebook. I only keep them open as it is a way to keep in contact with a few people. I’m just about to the point of not even caring. If they want to find me they can hunt other ways. LOL

Twitter, I like, because it is a great way to ge information I want. Since I’m back in college it is nice to do a twollo thing and get sources for various courses I’m taking.

Blogs, well, blogs for me now are another way of searching some things out. My blog is more of a way to speak out some things I can’t really say outloud. :P

I guess for some you gotta do what ya gotta do and I understand those who have closed out a lot of social media. It can be all consuming and gets in the way of other things.

And what a sad commentary on the publishing world. Guess how it the “monster” works.

  5. Nick says:

Yeah, I think the publishing world just needs to know that it can sell your product. I don’t particularly blame them for needing something quantitative.

Jules do it, pull the plug on myspace, if people want to find you, you can do facebook.

Twitter/Blogging/Podcasting – I think that is what I will get down to. But, we’ll see.

  6. yeah. i just posted something on this subject. btw, where’d your previous design go? i really liked the drawing!

I got to thinking about this. I’m going to blog about it. LOL

You know when you keep getting hit with a theme and you realize that maybe God might be telling you something, I think he is. LOL

I’m sharing this link with you because I think in some way it hits on what your short blog and others are saying…
