Friday 5ive [Favorite Post-Apocalyptic Movies]

By Nick in inspiration

I have been lax in my duties to blog Friday 5ives, but now I am back on track. My list this week comes after watching the 2009 movie, The Road. Which immediately got added to the list. Here are the top 5ive, in no order.

1. The Road [2009]
2. Night of the Living Dead [1968]
3. The Matrix [1999]
4. Children of Men [2006]
5. 12 Monkeys [1996]

So the Matrix is a toss up, it makes it into the list of dystopian films, and though it is a new sort of its own, I think it fits the bill.

I didn’t really include Zombie films, that should be a list of it’s own. I did have Night of the Living Dead, because of it’s prevalence to a nuclear scare when it came out, but some zombie films worth mention would be Shaun of the Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and Zombieland.

The Book of Eli was a pretty good flick too.

I just finished watching all of the Mad Max films, and I thought Thunderdome was the best of the bunch. I Am Legend and Wall-E deserve some consideration.

I’m really looking forward to The Road.

  2. Casey says:

so you liked Zombieland? i thought it was fantastic.
i’m about to do my list.

Casey – yes, I really dug Zombieland. Not on the list but a great zombie film.

Russell – It’s been a while since we have talked. I haven’t seen The Book of Eli, yet, I aim to, and I will comment accordingly. I have seen part of a couple mad max films, but I will probably have to have a Mad Max film day. And as far as I am Legend. I am a little over Will Smith. I Am Legend left me sort of ‘meh’, I didn’t think it was bad, but I thought it could have been a lot better.

And those are my thoughts on that.

Fun list. However, I think the huge caveat must be added that you have not seen any Mad Max movie in full. Actually I must admit it means you almost need to postpone this list until you have.

It is like a list of top Science Fiction before seeing the Star Wars trilogy or vampire flicks without seeing the original Dracula with Bela Lugosi.

We can debate over which of the 3 is best (Road Warrior, c’mon), but 1 must be included.

I would differ with you regarding Children of Men. I think of it as dystopian, but not yet post-apocalyptic. The world is slowly hemorrhaging, but life has not yet ended as we understand it. I had never thought of The Matrix as PA, but that is an interesting genre to place it in.

I don’t think we can put in 1 zombie flick and justify it, while not adding other zombie flicks. Some zombie flicks are not yet PA, because the apocalypse is beginning or they are in the midst of the apocalypse, which is how I think of Night of the Living Dead. I do think of Zombieland and 28 Days/ Weeks Later as PA because the world as we know it has already ended.

Remember Zombieland is The Road with twinkies and Bill Murray.
